A three-year, fully funded postgraduate programme in healthcare science.
This highly competitive part-time MSc is accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science (NSHCS) and delivered in collaboration with our partners in the Manchester Academy of Healthcare Science Education (MAHSE).
This programme combines academic learning at The University of Manchester with clinical training in NHS Trusts. It leads to qualification as a clinical scientist in either a laboratory setting or a patient facing role (genomic counsellors) and registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).

What can you study?
MSc Clinical Science (Genomic Sciences)
This programme has four specialist pathways:
Cancer Genomics
Working alongside pathologists, geneticists and genomic counsellors, you’ll contribute to diagnosing, monitoring, and treating a wide range of cancers. You’ll be responsible for analysing genetic material to understand how variations in genes contribute to the development of cancer.

Clinical Bioinformatics Genomics
Work as part of a team that includes clinical scientists, clinicians, IT teams and external providers. Combine skills in computing, biology and medicine to play a key role in the analysis and management of genetic and genomic data enabling the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of genetic conditions.

Genomics
Play a crucial role in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating genetic conditions. You’ll work within the NHS Genomic Medicine Service and be responsible for analysing genetic material to understand how variations in genes may contribute to specific diseases.

Genomic Counselling
Work alongside individuals and families providing genetic/genomic information and support to empower patients to use the information in a personally meaningful way. This may include decision-making around the timing of genomic testing and screening, and subsequently adjusting to the results.

How to apply
Apply for the programme through the National School for Healthcare Science website.
Successful applicants will be based within accredited Centres for Genomic Medicine in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. They will travel to The University of Manchester for elements of the taught programme. Trainees on the programme will be salaried as band 6 Trainee Clinical Scientists.
The NSHCS recruits for the Scientist Training Programme annually.
