Your interview
You have an interview for a BMidwif place at Manchester – congratulations!
Your BMidwif interview will be held either on Zoom or on campus, depending on your preference. You won't be disadvantaged depending on the option you choose.
You'll be interviewed by an academic member of staff and possibly a clinical member of staff or a service user.
The following pages have some important information about what will happen before, during and after the interview.
When?
The date and time of your interview is on UCAS Hub.

Where?
Your interview will either be in person at The University of Manchester or online.

How long?
You will be on campus for approximately 3 hours, or online for 1 hour (20-minute interview plus welcome presentation).

Before your interview
Things you need to do in advance.
Confirm your attendance
You should confirm your attendance on UCAS Hub as soon as possible, ideally within 48 hours.
We will do our best to accommodate any requests for a new date. If you have confirmed your attendance on UCAS Hub and request a change of date with short notice, you will likely be added to a wait list. We may only be able to offer a new date towards the end of the interview process (February/March).
Send us the required documents
You must send us the following documents before your interview.
- Scanned images of your educational certificates.
- An updated academic reference (current Access to HE students only).
- A signed copy of the Holiday Disclaimer Form (Word, 34KB).
You will receive an email with details on how and where to upload these documents, and how to create an IT account, if you haven't already done so.
Request any extra support
If you have a disability and require extra support on the interview day, you must contact the Disability Advisory and Support Service on +44 (0)161 275 7512 or by emailing dass@manchester.ac.uk at least one week before your interview.
You will need to provide them with suitable evidence of your disability one week in advance of the interview. They will then inform us of any arrangements that need to be made for you.
Prepare for the interview
You should have a think about the interview process, what you'd like to ask and topics you may wish to prepare for by considering how you might answer questions within those themes.
For more information on the values and behaviours standards required of Midwives, please see the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code.
If you have selected an online interview, you may wish to download Zoom in advance of your interview. If you have chosen an on-campus interview, please refer to the booking email for the location of the interview.

What to expect at your interview.
Online interviews
If you have selected an online interview, your interview will take place online using Zoom.
You will be sent two Zoom links. One will be for a welcome presentation, and the other will be for your 20-minute interview. There will be an opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have about the BMidwif course at the end of the interview.
On-campus interview
The interview session will be in the morning or afternoon, and will include a welcome presentation, a chance to talk to current Midwifery students and other applicants, a short individual interview, and an optional campus tour.
Interviews will take place at the Jean McFarlane Building (building no. 92 on the interactive map) on the University campus.
What we look for
The interview will gauge your ability to:
- think on your feet;
- critically appraise information;
- communicate ideas and listen to others.
You will need to demonstrate that you have thought about some of the issues that are important to the midwifery profession. During your interview, try to show your interviewers:
- who you are and how your qualities and characteristics can benefit midwifery;
- your previous experiences and what you have learnt from these;
- your understanding of the wide role of midwives;
- what women and birthing people from diverse backgrounds need.
The offer of a place will be based on your application, your performance during the interview, and the assessment of your interviewer.
After your interview
You'll hear from us soon.
We hope to be able to inform you of the outcome of your interview within a week.
However, please note that we may postpone our decision until later in the interview cycle to ensure a fair and equitable process for all our applicants. We will inform you if this is the case.
Join us in person
Following the interviews, you will have the opportunity to attend an on-campus offer holder event (from the end of January 2025) to give you the opportunity to visit the University campus, meet our staff and current students, and see the facilities in Jean McFarlane Building.
For international students, or those who cannot make it to campus, online offer holder events will also take place.
