Casper Situational Judgement Test (Casper SJT)

All applicants for BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy (B840) course are required to sit the Casper SJT.

We are expecting applicants to offer a Casper result for our Dental Hygiene and Therapy course. We advise applicants to keep up to date on the most recent guidance for testing on the Casper website.

About the Casper SJT

The Casper SJT has been designed to help universities determine whether you have the skills and attributes that we consider appropriate for an aspiring dental hygienist or dental therapist.

These skills include collaboration, communication, empathy, equity, ethics, motivation, problem solving, professionalism, resilience and self-awareness – all of which inform professionalism and social intelligence.

The test is taken online and takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete. Its aim is to probe innate skills and competencies rather than test acquired knowledge. Advice and guidance about how to prepare for the test can be found on the Casper website.

The Casper SJT result is valid only for the year in which you apply (either for direct or deferred entry). If you are making a second application, you must retake the test.

Use of the Casper SJT

Applications for Dental Hygiene and Therapy are assessed holistically, which means that we use all of the information available to us to arrive at a decision.

Applicants will firstly be ranked according to their overall Casper score, and then the Academic Lead for Admissions may also assess applications by taking into account other information.

The primary data taken into account for the holistic assessment includes:

  • academic achievements, including:
    • qualifications that have gone above and beyond the minimum academic entry criteria;
    • qualifications that are both pending (with the predicted grade) and achieved;
  • Casper SJT score;
  • UCAS personal statement.

Applicants who are successful at this stage of the admissions process will be invited for interview.
