The Global South Fellowship

The Global South Fellowship is run by the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health at The University of Manchester. The award offers funding to support clinical, applied health, methodologists and pure science researchers from low or lower middle income countries looking to create research partnerships. These fellowships are a stepping stone to securing externally funded, prestigious fellowships and/or global health funding.

All applications should align to the ethos of the partnerships the Faculty has established, having a research focus on non-communicable diseases.

About Global South

The goal of the award is to provide pump-priming funds for clinical, applied health, pure science researchers and methodologists looking to apply for externally funded, prestigious fellowships and/or global health funding, from UK national funding bodies. These may include UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the Wellcome Trust (WT) or the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

This distinguished award is part of our programme focused on the development of a positive and inclusive research culture and offers funding to promote the careers of aspiring academic researchers by bridging that difficult career gap between excellent postdoctoral researcher and research independence whilst providing opportunities to obtain and transfer new skills and knowledge through training and career development.

Funding

We are offering salary at an appropriate level & career stage plus up to £10,000 per annum support costs for two years, with the possibility of extending the position to three years & a further £5000 support costs (pending successful review). Applications for an external fellowship or Global Health funding will be expected by the end of the first year, or early in the second year.

Fellows will be expected to secure substantial funding for their research and complete research outputs of international excellence.

Eligibility

The award is available for clinical, applied health, pure science & methodologist applicants as a stepping stone to an intermediate or senior level fellowship, or Global Heath Funding.

  • All pure science & methodologist applications should already hold a PhD. While flexible, in broad terms, we anticipate pure science applicants will have postdoctoral experience.
  • Clinical and applied health applicants will be about to complete or have just completed clinical training or be able to demonstrate equivalent Research Career and Training.
Whilst we will try and accommodate NHS specialist training, this may not be possible for all specialities and is subject to availability/demand.
You will also need to meet the eligibility criteria for an International Fellow post at your sponsored Trust to apply for GMC registration (if required).
For further information relating to the integrated academic training pathway (Medicine), please see the NIHR IAT Guide, detailed within Figure 1a.
  • You must not hold UK citizenship or citizenship of another high-income country. If you are currently completing a PhD in a country not defined as a Least Developed, Low-Income or Lower Middle Income Country (as defined by ODEC), you may still be eligible to apply based on prior experience.
  • Be working and have been based outside of the UK within a Least Developed, Low-Income or Lower Middle Income Country (as defined by ODEC), for at least one year.
  • You must be proficient in oral and written English.
  • Show the potential to establish clear intellectual links to current Faculty members to benefit from appropriate mentorship, advice and support.
